Thoughts For Collecting Knives

Whether you have a passion for knife collecting, pride in our history and heritage, or desire to create a lasting legacy for future generations - or all three - this is living history, meant to be shared with kids and grandkids without fear of fingerprints or scratches.

As the jucies flow, so does the blood through our vains.  Knives, they are everywhere! Around the world in every culture. They are used for everything. Yes, from whittles to viddles.

There have been many laws written about them. Some good, some bad. The knife tool came with mankind, enhancing with history. We can't live without them! Chopping, slicing, cutting, there is one designed for every need. There are so many distinct and significant designs to choose from that it makes collecting them endless, fun and so rewarding.

Keeping them sharp and clean, they can be used a life time and passed on. They can be missed used, and they'll turn to rust and decay away to nothing in no time!

Many people own one, and many people have collections. It's said, that better than 90% of us remember our first knife. A lot less still have it!?  There uses are endless! From hunting and fishing to mom's stew. Seldom will you find a person that hasn't lost a least one. Better yet, found one!

For the most part we're all good people using them. Unforunately there will always be those power hunger freaks out there. Their usual choice today, believe it or not, a kitchen knive. I see where some makers have been talking to the Chefs of the world.  They're reporting there is about to be some changes made soon.  Those nice really long pointed Kitchen Knives don't really sever a need in the kitchen. A Chef will grab a heavy duty fork almost every time when it comes to stabbing something.

Knives are items that were often carefully selected by the people who wore them and were used over a number of years. As such, they became very personal items for those who wore them, often considered expressions of their personality and social status.  This personal relationship people had with knives is reflected in the presentation knives popular in the 19th Century. Many of them had inscriptions. These inscriptions would have the name of the individual being honored with the knife, often the date, and at times the name of the gift giver.  Presentation knives were a tangible symbol of the esteem or love in which the recipient was held and were often treated with great care by the person receiving such a knife.

They were the direct expressions of the carver's passions and deires, humors and beliefs. They make fascinatng objects to study.

Look deep enough into a collection of knives and you will learn a great deal about the people who first owned them and the times in which they lived.

It takes time and patience to come across fine examples, but the patient collector will be rewarded. Check online for antique dealers and auctioneers near you.

Once you are familiar with the many forms, identifing marks, distinctive features that vary over time, and the rough values for various knives the more fun and interesting it gets. Knives never or very seldom depreciate in value if well taken care of.

You may want to join one of the knive collector's organization near you.  There you will meet like-mined collectors, dealers and auctioneers who share your interest and are fonts of knowledge when asked. Then begin to shop. Go to auctions, specialty shows and antiques dealers' shops, and get to know the knives first hand.  Once you feel comfortable with the knives you choose to collect, then you may begin acquiring these fascinating objects with confindence and will be less likely making serious mistakes buying them. In the mean time buy a new one you have an interest in.

I would like to give you a word of advice if you are going to collect and possibly use a knive. Be sure to research your local state laws concerning knives or cealed weapons as each state has a different version of your legal rights. We want you having happy trails!

We here at Jimbolee Knives put our products out there, for you the consumer, with hope and faith they'll be used for the purpose they were designed for only. We all know we have legal obligation while using them, so please do so!
